Ideally located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the Rocky Point sugar cane growing area consists of over 5000 hectares of flat low lying rich soils that produce upwards of 35,000 tonnes of premium raw sugar. The Rocky Point Sugar Mill is the only privately owned Australian mill, having started in 1878 it is also one of the oldest, although possibly one of the most technologically advanced. Being a high rainfall region, limited irrigation is required to grow the sugarcane crop compared to other areas. Most farms are family owned and operated and generally considered some of the best sugarcane growers in the industry. The heck group grow almost one quarter of the Rocky Point crop on over 1000 Ha of owned and leased land whilst adhering to sustainable farming practices that protect the long term future of the natural enviroment. The mill operates on a continuous basis from July to December each year crushing more than a quarter of a million tonnes of cane, with the waste fibre used to power some thirty thousand homes in south east Qld.
